Home Insurance: Protect Your Most Precious Asset

Whether you are renting a home or owning it, you have worked hard to gain the asset and don't want to risk anything about it. The next logical step is to protect it from any disasters and damage by obtaining home insurance.

Home insurance protects you, your house and its contents as well as your precious possessions in the face of damage, loss (for instance due to natural disasters) and theft. Homeowner's insurance can be extended to vandalization, slandering of your property by an animal, libels from people injured in your home and much more. This all depend on your type of policy and the premium you pay, which differ from company to company. In most cases, insurance companies adapt their policies to fit the needs of the community and geographic area they are serving.

It is a good idea to cover your home, even if it is paid for in full, but when you have a mortgage, it is usually obligatory to have insurance. Standard home insurance only cover some specific forms of natural disasters, but can exclude, for example, hurricanes and tornados.

Choose your insurance companies with care. Don't let price be your only consideration. Customer service and prompt payment on claims are the keys to look for when deciding on an insurance company. Words to look out for in an insurance contract are "guaranteed replacement cost" and "off premises coverage." Check that your company provide for flood or earth quake riders if it is bound to happen in your geographical area.
